VELOSTAZIONI PER NOMADI SU DUE RUOTE Rifunzionalizzazione di un edificio storico come hub ciclistico nell'area dell'Anfiteatro romano d'Ivrea

The course addresses two important issues regarding bicycle mobility that our territories pose to architectural design. The first concerns the need to equip long-distance cycleways with service infrastructures understood as public spaces aimed at communities of inhabitants. The planned velostation is located in Ivrea, refunctionalizing a building that stands in the archaeological area of the Roman Amphitheater. The second issue relates to the use for cycling purposes of historic infrastructure that provides protected cycling sites for long-distance cycle routes. The chosen area represents the junction point between the Via Francigena cycle route of the Aosta Valley and the possible cycle route along the historic Naviglio di Ivrea, which reaches Vercelli and thus in close proximity to the Eurovelo 8 cycle route along the Po River.
The Atelier addressed both issues by proposing as design themes the project of restoration and re-functionalization as a velostation and bike-hotel of the pre-existing building, the rethinking of its relationship and role towards the archaeological area, and the design of the connection with the Ivrea Naviglio intake.
