New Nomads

The evolution of contemporary lifestyles towards instability seems the result of both the pressure of ongoing transformations and the attraction they exert. On the one hand, capitalism is transforming ownership into access to services, things into experiences, but, on the other hand, this is precisely a scenario the anticapitalistic left strived for, as a modern outcome of freedom (from the constraints of place, family, religion, gender...) modernization was expected to deliver. 'Remote presence', that gained momentum in the last years, further accelerated this trend, disrupting the living/working divide and giving way to a number of possible ways to inhabit the gap. Everything is thus adapting to the new nomads and rising dwelling scenarios try to translate their needs and desires into architectural answers.
This studio focussed on the isolato Sant’Eligio, a block in the city centre of Turin where a recent design competition asked for proposals able to house fresh graduates, offering them the opportunity to remain in town and start to make a living here. Students probed, therefore, a programme merging a hotel (as a functional and economical backbone), a ‘dwelling incubator’ (for longer stay), and shared facilities. Since the envelope is the place where many architectural issues tend to concentrate nowadays, students had further explored in detail the interface between interior and exterior.
