Using the site of former Acetati Plant in Verbania as a testing ground, the studio explored the many ways in which design work unfolds in the city that is built and inhabited already. Students were guided in understanding the spatial effects of industrialization processes and manufacture transformation in a medium-size city of Northern Italy. Yet, students were also encouraged to broaden their horizons in terms of conceptualization of design in changing contexts and international trajectories to approach issues such as landscape as a tool for urban design, designing for the multitude of spaces between buildings, recombining uses on top of zoning prescriptions, and the overlapping of the spaces for living and working. Students, each with a thematic lens explored in the first weeks, had the opportunity to use qualitative and quantitative tools in team to argue for strategies or palimpsests of transformation, within which design pathways were finalized in solo work.
