History of Architecture and Cities Laboratory B

The transformation of architectural and urban space needs to be investigated in a diachronic dimension. In order to gain a deep understanding of such transformations in any scale from object to territory scale, there is a need to ask correct questions to understand how past relates to present and to future. In this context, the course History of architecture and cities Lab B aims to provide the students with the knowledge and skills to develop a basic historical research (literature; secondary sources; primary sources), to use this research outcomes to frame a historical knowledge on the history of architecture and history of cities, to ability to define the various values of cultural heritage and to develop strategies of valorisation, dissemination and protection of the cultural and architectural heritage.

The theme of the History of Architecture and Cities Lab B for the academic year 2023/24 is: “An architectural history of crisis: Insights on how architecture contributes to risks and how it helps overcome them”. This theme will focus on examining the role of architecture in times of crisis to explore how architectural interventions and practices both contribute to risks and help in overcoming them. The lab aims to provide insights into the historical relationship between architecture and crises, revealing the ways in which architecture has either exacerbated or addressed various risks throughout history.
