Projects for Suburban China: ChengXiang Old Town, Chengdu

Widely addressed in Western countries, suburbanization in China is a recent trend caused by the rapid economic development of the last two decade. Gigantic industrial parks, new large-scale transportation infrastructures, and massive housing estates have brought both opportunities and challenges to traditional rural areas located in the fringes of the major cities. Chengxiang Old Town, thirty kilometers north of Chengdu, is an emblematic example. Based on this site, the studio elaborates scenarios to explore new relations between architectures, urban spaces, and the existing built environment.
