Living the infrastructure / Lishui

The course is the first edition of the Architectural Design Studio within the Co-Run Master Program in Urban Design between Politecnico di Torino – Department of Architecture and Design - and South China University of Technology (SCUT) – School of Architecture. Lishui, located in the Chinese Province of Zhejiang Province, has been selected as a case study to deepen the applied research started together with the SCUT School of Architecture in 2020 during the completion of the Future Shan-Shui City International Urban Design Competition. The role of infrastructure within the complexity of the Chinese urban expansion phenomenon has been envisioned as crucial in understanding a new way of balancing urban desire and environmental preservation. Dividing the Eastern part of Daxi River Valley into ten 3x3 km plots, the students have investigated alternative scenarios where infrastructure, natural resources and urban development may co-exist, promoting new landscape configurations.
